Rams vs Panthers

This Sunday’s matchup between the Carolina Panthers and the Los Angeles Rams pits two incredibly effective offenses against each other. The outcome of the game is going to depend on which team can run its offense on their terms.

The Panthers had incredible success running the ball last year. Carolina’s leading rusher, Christian McCaffrey, was one of the most effective ball carriers in the league, averaging five yards per attempt. It doesn’t help the Rams that they ranked dead last in rushing yards allowed per attempt in 2018. The Panthers will likely try to run the ball down the Rams’ throats.

Los Angeles has had an incredibly effective passing game over the last several years. Cooper Kupp, Brandin Cooks, and Robert Woods have all proved to be effective outlets for the Jared Goff led passing attack under Rams coach Sean McVay.

Both teams have star defensive players who will aim to interrupt the plans of these dynamic offenses. Rams sack master Aaron Donald has the power to disrupt a game all by himself. Carolina’s defense is stout in its own right. Led by punishing linebacker Luke Kuechly, the Panthers front seven could wreak havoc if given the opportunity. One key play from either defense could swing what is likely to be a close, high scoring game.

What to Know
Carolina and the Rams will face off at 1 p.m. ET Sept. 8 at Bank of America Stadium to kick off their 2019 seasons. Last year was nothing to brag about for Carolina (7-9), so the team is looking forward to a new start. On the other hand, the Rams enjoyed a 13-3 record and almost won it all, losing the Super Bowl 3-13 to New England.

Two last-season offensive stats to keep in the back of your head while watching: The Panthers were fourth in rushing yards per game, finishing the 2018 season with 133.5 on average. The Rams displayed some offensive firepower of their own as they ranked second in the league in overall touchdowns, closing the season with 55 overall. We’ll find out if either of these strengths ends up making the difference in the game.

The point spread is more or less neutral, so fans should expect a close contest. We’ll see if the game is as close as the oddsmakers expect, or if one of these teams has a surprise blowout in them.
